Elden Ring NPCs and Quests
On this page
Elden Ring does not track quests for you. There is no journal, no marker over an NPC’s head, and no notification when a storyline advances. What the game does instead is mark the map: after you talk to an NPC who has moved, their new location appears as a small icon, which is the closest thing to a quest log you get.
How a quest actually works
Most questlines are a sequence of conversations. You meet someone, they ask for something or mention somewhere, and later they appear in another place after you have done something else. Progress is often triggered by events elsewhere in the world, so a quest can sit untouched for hours and then move when you beat a boss.
The most common way to break a line is to skip a conversation step. If an NPC has new dialogue, exhaust it — keep talking until they start repeating themselves.
The people you meet first
Melina offers you an accord the first time you rest at a Site of Grace in the open world, and she is tied to the main story rather than an optional chain. Renna gives you the Spirit Calling Bell at the Church of Elleh. Roderika begins at the Stormhill Shack and later upgrades your Spirit Ashes at the Roundtable Hold, where Smithing Master Hewg upgrades weapons and Enia interprets Great Runes.
Out in the world, Merchant Kalé sells the basics, Sorceress Sellen teaches sorceries, and Brother Corhyn sells incantations once his shop opens.
Avoiding a dead end
| Habit | Why it saves a quest |
|---|---|
| Talk twice | The second pass often carries the real instruction |
| Read the map icons | They mark where an NPC has moved to |
| Rest and return | Some NPCs only move on after you rest or reload |
| Check before a major boss | A few lines advance when a region changes state |
If you do lose a questline, keep going. Very little is permanently missable, and the map will still show where someone is waiting.
