Elden Ring: Malenia Strategy for Waterfowl Dance and Phase Two

This page includes story or boss spoilers.

On this page

Malenia’s fight becomes more manageable when you identify its two demanding moments before you panic: Waterfowl Dance in either phase and Scarlet Aeonia at the start of phase two. She is at Haligtree Roots after the Haligtree route through Loretta, Elphael, and the descent past Drainage Channel; activate the grace outside her arena before learning the fight.

Give Waterfowl Dance room

Waterfowl begins with Malenia rising and hovering. Watch for three travelling flurries and the final delayed cut. If you already have space when she rises, use this escape sequence:

  1. Sprint directly away during the first two flurries.
  2. As the third approaches, roll back through her toward the side she came from.
  3. Roll away from her final cut before trying to attack.

This running method depends on your starting distance. It is not a reliable point-blank escape when you are still recovering from an attack. Finish shorter attack strings and recover stamina before she starts another move; that leaves room to use the sequence above.

Treat the phase change as an attack

Malenia opens phase two with Scarlet Aeonia. She rises, dives, and leaves a flower that releases Scarlet Rot. Sprint sideways as she dives, keep moving clear of the bloom, then wait for the damaging flower to fade before moving in. A ranged attack can use that stationary recovery window without entering the rot cloud.

Phase two can still include Waterfowl Dance and adds Scarlet Plunge. Keep the same Waterfowl spacing rule after the transition. Malenia also heals when her attacks connect, including through a block, so blocking can buy time but does not erase the cost of taking repeated hits.

Keep the post-fight flower in mind

The Scarlet Aeonia remains meaningful after victory for one specific quest route. If you completed Millicent’s helpful ending and recovered the Unalloyed Gold Needle, interact with the flower to obtain Miquella’s Needle. That item can remove the Frenzied Flame only in Dragonlord Placidusax’s arena.

See Millicent’s final choice and Frenzied Flame reversal for that reward chain.
