Elden Ring Lore

The story begins with a broken ring and a broken family. Queen Marika ruled the Lands Between as a god, and her children were demigods. When her son Godwyn the Golden was assassinated, Marika shattered the Elden Ring, the source of her power, and her remaining children took the pieces for themselves.
The Shattering
Each shard of the ring became a Great Rune, and each demigod who claimed one believed it entitled them to succeed Marika. Their war — the Shattering — ended in a stalemate. The demigods withdrew into their own strongholds, the world stalled, and the Golden Order fractured.
You are one of the Tarnished: a descendant of warriors who were banished long ago and who can no longer die properly. You are drawn back to the Lands Between by the guidance of grace, golden light that points towards what you should do next, and your stated goal is to reach the Erdtree, claim the Elden Ring, and become Elden Lord.
Grace and the Erdtree
Sites of Grace are the visible face of that idea. They are your checkpoints, and the golden rays that stream from them point towards your next objective. The Erdtree itself stands at the centre of the map as the destination the whole journey refers back to.
The demigods and the Great Runes
The shardbearers are the game’s main bosses: Godrick the Grafted, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, Starscourge Radahn, Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, and Mohg, Lord of Blood among them. Each holds a Great Rune, and the capital requires two of them before it will let you in.
Beyond the base game
Shadow of the Erdtree follows Miquella into the Realm of Shadow, a separate region reached through Mohgwyn Palace, with its own demigods including Messmer the Impaler. The lore there answers questions the base game raises about Marika’s history.
None of this is required to enjoy the game. The story is told through items, architecture, and brief conversations, so reading a summary like this one is a legitimate way to keep the plot in view while you play.
