Elden Ring Boss Order

This page includes story or boss spoilers.

On this page

Elden Ring lets you approach the main bosses in several orders, but a couple of gates shape the sequence: you need two Great Runes to enter Leyndell, Royal Capital, and the capital is guarded by the Draconic Tree Sentinel. The order below follows the route most first runs take.

Order Boss Region What it opens
1 Margit, the Fell Omen Limgrave The way into Stormveil Castle
2 Godrick the Grafted Stormveil Castle A Great Rune
3 Red Wolf of Radagon Raya Lucaria Academy The path to the academy’s boss
4 Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon Raya Lucaria Academy A Great Rune, and respec
5 Starscourge Radahn Redmane Castle, Caelid A Great Rune and the way underground
6 God-Devouring Serpent / Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy Volcano Manor A Great Rune
7 Draconic Tree Sentinel Outside the capital The route into Leyndell
8 Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Golden Shade) Leyndell The path to the Erdtree
9 Morgott, the Omen King Leyndell A Great Rune and the late game
10 Fire Giant Mountaintops of the Giants The way to Farum Azula
11 Beast Clergyman / Maliketh, the Black Blade Crumbling Farum Azula The rune of death

Bosses you can skip

Mohg, Lord of Blood, is optional but required for the expansion’s entrance. Malenia, Blade of Miquella is optional and famously the hardest fight in the game. Lichdragon Fortissax in Deeproot Depths is optional and easy to lose if you kill Fia before it. In the expansion, Messmer the Impaler and Promised Consort Radahn are the headline fights of the Realm of Shadow.

If a boss will not fall

Come back later. Almost every boss in this list can be left and revisited, and the two Great Runes needed for the capital can come from any two Shardbearers rather than a fixed pair. Take the easier Great Rune first if one route is giving you trouble.
