Elden Ring: Getting Started

On this page

Let the first Graces set your direction

Sites of Grace are checkpoints, fast-travel points, and the places where the early story offers its key tools. Follow the first few rays only long enough to meet Melina, accept the accord, and gain levelling plus Torrent. Then treat Limgrave as a learning ground, not a corridor you must clear in one pass. If a tunnel, camp, or field boss hurts too much, mark it and ride somewhere else.

The Church of Elleh is a useful early return point for a merchant, crafting basics, and the first nearby routes. The Gatefront area teaches stealth, mounted travel, map fragments, and enemy groups. Pull guards apart, circle a camp’s outside edge, and use the map marker system for a locked door or boss you want to revisit. Every detour can return value through a flask upgrade, smithing material, weapon, or new Grace.

Build enough room to learn

Meet a weapon’s requirements before chasing damage scaling. Keep Vigor and endurance high enough that one missed dodge does not end every attempt, then reinforce the weapon whose move set you can actually use. A shield, jump attack, charged heavy, guard counter, and weapon skill are all tools; use the answer that exposes the safest opening instead of forcing the same roll through every fight.

This page covers the base game. Shadow of the Erdtree adds a separate realm, weapons, and a DLC-specific blessing system, so do not apply a DLC progression recommendation to Limgrave. Next, read Weapon Upgrades or Spirit Ashes and Summoning.

Turn an unsuccessful attempt into a short route

After a tough enemy, name the thing that actually ended the attempt. If your weapon did too little, visit a mine or Weapon Upgrades. If two heals were not enough, find a Golden Seed or Sacred Tear through Flask Upgrades. If you could not see the attack, return with a lighter equipment load or a different shield and spend one attempt watching rather than forcing damage. That keeps exploration, build work, and boss practice connected instead of making every setback a rune grind.
