Owning a book is not the bonus
Books go to the Cabin’s Bookshelf when you earn them. Select one book there, then let it progress while sailing, fishing, or dredging. Sleeping pauses the reading progress. The listed effect becomes permanent only after that book finishes, so swap to another unread book when the completion notice appears.

Choose the next book by the next trip
Early on, Engineer’s Companion helps if you are using durability gear regularly, while Correct Engine Operation helps any route with a long crossing. A panic book is useful before a deliberate night-fishing job; it does not remove the need to return to a dock. The money books are stronger over many sales and purchases than on one small haul.
Do not spend a day sleeping merely to read faster. The book pauses there. Make its progress while doing normal work: retrieve pots, run a local pursuit, or sail between regions. Once a bonus is complete, it stays active even after you choose another book.
Four books come from the base game’s Hooded Figure pursuits, while the Pale Reach book requires that DLC. Use Hooded Figures for the base-game hand-ins, A Place to Rest for Engineer’s Companion, and Craven Courier for the early panic book. A book is a passive improvement, not a replacement for the rod, hull, or route requirement in front of you.
