DREDGE Abyssal and Hadal Gear Guide: Deep Fishing Without a Bad Refit

Deep water starts with the Researcher
The first purposeful Abyssal route comes from Research Assistant in Stellar Basin. After you turn in the surface samples, restore the Research Outpost, install the Repulsion Machine, and finish the deep sample set, the Researcher gives you the Sampling Device. It is a pursuit reward that lets you take the required samples; it also starts the research path toward deeper gear.
Do not mistake the device for a complete deep-sea build. It occupies a boat slot, has its own habitat coverage, and may be inefficient for ordinary money fishing. It gets the pursuit moving. Your next research decision should come from a fish or relic requirement, not from the idea that every deep label needs the largest rod immediately.
Read the habitat labels separately
Abyssal and Hadal are different requirements. Before spending Research Parts, open the encyclopedia entry for the target. Look at the habitat line, time condition, and catch method. A rod that reaches Abyssal fish might still fail a Hadal target; a net or crab pot target is not solved by fitting another rod.
The broad route is:
- Finish the Researcher stages until the Sampling Device opens the deep sample route.
- Research the next rod only after the journal or encyclopedia names a missing habitat.
- Buy it from the Shipwright or Travelling Merchant.
- Confirm it fits with your engine and light before leaving the dock.
- Take one target trip, then reassess rather than buying the next branch on impulse.
Compare function before price
Bottomless Lines and the Fathomless Winch are researchable deep-water rods. The Winch covers both Abyssal and Hadal and needs a four-slot square; it is powerful but can force a hull or layout decision. Bottomless Lines is a smaller option for its own coverage. The Viscera Crane from the shark shrine also handles Abyssal and Hadal, but it is an optional puzzle reward, not a shop purchase.
| Need | Best planning question |
|---|---|
| One Researcher sample | Can the Sampling Device do this before I buy another rod? |
| A named Abyssal or Hadal fish | Which exact habitat is missing in the encyclopedia? |
| A large deep rod will not fit | Is a dry-dock refit more useful than another unlock? |
| Shark shrine reward | Can I bring its four required sharks without losing the quest cargo? |
Keep the rest of the boat usable
For the destination-specific checks, see Gale Cliffs Fish Reference, Stellar Basin Fish Reference, and Devil’s Spine Fish Reference. A deep rod helps only when you can reach the water, return with the catch, and store the item. Removing every engine for the largest device can turn a daytime plan into a Panic problem. Removing your light can make an evening return worse than taking a second trip. Use Ship Upgrades for the grid decision and Stellar Basin Pursuits for the unlock sequence.
The Ring relic and the four Recording Rarities fish are separate goals. The latter includes an Abyssal Oarfish and Coelacanth, so it is a strong reason to plan deep equipment only when you are ready to collect and report them. See Recording Rarities.
