Mark Dunn's third novel tells the life of Jonathan Blashette, a circus performer born with three legs who makes a fortune in the deodorant business and becomes a celebrated philanthropist. The biography itself does not survive: letters between the author and his editor explain that the only manuscript was knocked into a bathtub, leaving the endnotes to be published alone.
