About
Only Revolutions is a road novel by the American writer Mark Z. Danielewski, released in the United States on 12 September 2006 by Pantheon Books. It is built around two narratives rather than one.
The first belongs to Sam and Hailey and the second to Hailey and Sam, two wild and wayward teenagers who never grow old. With a changing series of cars, they move through various places and moments in time as they try to outrace history.
As the story proceeds, many of the events are perceptual rather than certain, and the reader has to work between the two versions to make sense of the whole. The writing itself is a mixture of poetry and stream-of-consciousness prose.
Each of the two narrators describes their feelings about the other as well as their thoughts and ideas, so the book records a relationship as well as a journey. The author has said that he wanted the novel to be confusing beyond what he could digest himself, and the working title had been THAT.
