Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Kim Shin has spent centuries as an immortal goblin with a sword lodged in his chest. Only his destined bride can remove it and end his life. Ji Eun-tak, an orphan who sees ghosts, claims to be that bride, but their growing love makes the promised release less welcome. Shin shares his home with a memoryless Grim Reaper, whose attraction to chicken-shop owner Sunny connects them to their shared past. The Reaper was Wang Yeo, the king responsible for Shin’s execution; Sunny was Shin’s sister, Queen Kim Sun, whom the king loved and condemned.
The ghost of the manipulative eunuch threatens Sunny and Eun-tak. When Eun-tak is possessed and then rendered unconscious, Shin uses her hand to draw the sword and destroy the spirit. He dissolves into dust, and memories of him disappear. Given release from his punishment, he instead remains between worlds. Nine years later, Eun-tak’s birthday wish summons him back in Korea, but she no longer recognizes him. Their encounters continue, and her memories return during a visit to Quebec. They reunite, Shin proposes, and they marry. Sunny, who has retained her memories, chooses to leave the Reaper in this lifetime.
Eun-tak’s married life ends when she sacrifices herself to protect a bus of children from a runaway truck. In the afterlife, she promises Shin she will return through her remaining lives. Years later, the Reaper finishes his punishment and accompanies Sunny into the afterlife. Both are subsequently reborn as ordinary humans and find one another again, without recognizing Shin. He continues waiting, until a schoolgirl approaches him near the cemetery in Quebec. She is Eun-tak reincarnated, remembering the man she promised to meet again.
