Eun-tak explores Quebec with Kim Shin, delighted by a trip that gives her a brief escape from home. He catches a falling maple leaf and visits the graves of people whose lives he has outlasted. Eun-tak sees his grief and gives him space before introducing herself at the cemetery. Back in Korea, Shin tests his doorway on the Grim Reaper, who cannot follow him as she did.
Her aunt turns the Quebec souvenir into another accusation about missing insurance money and beats her with the book. Eun-tak leaves and eventually finds work at Sunny's chicken restaurant. She wants to thank Shin, but their meetings also expose his uncertainty about her claim. The Reaper recognizes her as the child who escaped death years earlier; Shin steps between them and admits that he is a goblin.
Shin still rejects Eun-tak as his bride because she has not identified the thing he needs her to see. Hurt, she promises to stop summoning him. Ghosts then tell her that he saved her mother before she was born. Meanwhile, her aunt sends loan sharks after the supposed insurance money. They abduct Eun-tak outside school, but her terror reaches Shin, and he approaches their car with the Reaper.
