The Core of It opens with a woman approaching Lightman after a book signing because she believes she has seen a murder in a psychic vision. His investigation finds that Trisha is one identity within Sophie, whose other identities hold different pieces of the experience. The team traces the death of Amber, a sex worker, to a hotel encounter. Sophie confronts Trent while the investigators listen, drawing out his admission and allowing them to intervene.
Torres meanwhile vets a Supreme Court candidate whose past contact with a victim’s daughter raises concerns about his judgment. The inquiry establishes an improper kiss rather than the affair initially suspected, and the nomination proceeds. Lightman faces another decision when Zoe plans a move that could take Emily away. He borrows money to buy Zoe’s share of the consultancy, enabling her to stay, then faces Foster’s anger at risking their business without consulting her.
By Black and White, the murder of Lightman’s journalist friend Julie brings the work back into his private life. A source named Hackman admits working as a hired killer, then is shot before Lightman can meet him; Reynolds is wounded during the encounter. Reassembled documents help expose Cook’s scheme involving corrupt police and revenge against a councilman. Julie’s investigation will continue, but Reynolds is left in hospital. Lightman also learns that Emily has become sexually active, forcing a conversation he cannot manage as neatly as an interrogation.
