Sergeant Jeff Turley nearly shoots his son during an episode of terror at home, bringing Lightman and Gillian to his military base. Turley returned from Iraq six months earlier and is due a Silver Star, yet he cannot explain the danger he believes surrounds him. His distress and fragmented memories point back to an ambush. The team uses simulated scenes to investigate what he remembers rather than treating his confusion as deliberate deceit.

Captain Renshaw's report says he saved Turley after the sergeant froze during combat. At home, another soldier, Ronnie Baca, has been living above the garage and has injured Turley's son. When Turley disappears with Ronnie's gun, Cal and Gillian find him confronting Renshaw. Lightman disarms the standoff, then returns to the ambush with the men involved. The account that earned Turley his medal has concealed a fatal act by his captain.

Renshaw accidentally killed a fellow soldier and ordered an air strike to hide what happened. Turley had absorbed responsibility for deaths that he could not coherently remember. Renshaw is arrested for the cover-up, and Turley visits the dead man's grave with his family. The drama's simulated treatment and interpretations belong to this fictional case. Cal later shows Emily photographs of his own father as a soldier, admitting how little he asked about the war before his father returned to ordinary work.
