Lightman agrees to testify for the prosecution against Clara Musso, a young widow accused of killing her wealthy husband Victor. Zoe represents Clara, putting their personal history inside a public courtroom dispute. Cal initially challenges Clara's claim that she lost her memory after finding the body, but further questioning convinces him she is innocent. His attempts to speak with her outside the trial briefly land him in custody for interfering with a client.
The investigation exposes several accounts that protect somebody's reputation. Victor's son invents a sexual relationship with Clara, while her former friend Tanya has been blackmailing her over intimate photographs. Clara's missing time conceals a payment to Tanya rather than a murder. Lightman records Tanya admitting her motive and gets the photographs handed over. Their existence explains Clara's withdrawals without establishing the prosecution's claim that she killed for money.
Victor's friend and financial officer Leo finally admits helping him die after doctors said he had little time left. A recording Victor made confirms the request. Leo pleads guilty to manslaughter and obstruction, and Clara is cleared. She asks Lightman to advise her as she takes over the business. Cal also explains his attachment to Gillian and acknowledges that he never stopped loving Zoe. The episode closes with Cal and Zoe leaving dinner together after the trial.
