Eric Matheson arrives at the Lightman Group determined to prove that he did not murder his wife, Connie. Armed and desperate, he takes the office hostage and demands an investigation. Lightman persuades him to let the others go while remaining with him. Gillian, Torres, Loker and Reynolds work outside the room, interviewing people connected to Connie and sending their findings back while trying to prevent the police from forcing a confrontation.

Matheson's debts lead the team to creditor Mike Zancanelli. Connie had approached him about the money, and he coerced her into sex before pursuing her further. She recorded their conversations, giving him a reason to search her apartment and kill her. Her sister's account of borrowing a recorder helps establish what happened. Lightman tells Matheson that he believes him and will support his innocence, but identifying the killer does not persuade him to lower the gun.

Matheson demands Zancanelli for revenge. Loker volunteers to impersonate the creditor because Matheson has never met him, giving Reynolds an opening to shoot and disarm the hostage-taker. Zancanelli subsequently confesses to Connie's murder. The escape leaves the staff dealing with the danger in their own ways. Lightman attempts to distract himself with a woman, then visits Gillian and asks to stay in her spare room. He also acknowledges the value of her work keeping their business running.
