A teenager named Max approaches the Lightman Group believing that the people who raised him kidnapped him as a baby. Lightman and Gillian investigate his childhood and locate his biological father, John Donnelly. The abduction grew out of another man's anger at Donnelly, whose work as a parole officer returned him to prison. While he was incarcerated, his daughter died, and he took Donnelly's son as revenge for losing his own family.
Finding the truth does not give Max an easy reunion. His father calls him Owen and knows little about the teenager he has become, while Max still loves the people who raised him. Lightman makes the kidnapper acknowledge what he did, and the families begin working through custody arrangements. Emily, who helped her friend reach the consultancy, watches the adults struggle with an outcome that cannot restore sixteen missing years.
Loker and Torres separately examine a fatal Black Friday shopping stampede. A father rushing towards his injured daughter initially appears solely responsible for setting the crowd in motion. Torres presses beyond that convenient finding and discovers the girl slipped on ice before the crush began. The store failed to salt the area and its security response worsened the danger. When the client wants only the favourable part of their report, Loker refuses the fee, and Lightman backs the decision.
