Torres receives a plea for help from her half-sister Ava, who is held in a juvenile facility. Ava's friend Marley has disappeared, and officials resist giving Torres access. When Marley is found murdered, Ava admits she was pregnant and that she heard her call for help. Her evasions draw on Torres's guilt about their abusive childhood, making it difficult for the sisters to speak without accusation or manipulation.
A stolen jeweled egg connects Marley to a robbery ring. Lightman gets Ava out of the facility and places her with Gillian, but masked intruders break in and take the object. Recordings of therapy sessions help Gillian identify one participant. The young people have been committing robberies in exchange for reduced sentences, with the deputy warden controlling their releases. The egg was kept as leverage, and Marley hoped it could help her leave before her baby was born.
The deputy warden blames an employee, Dax, who admits killing a man during a robbery but accuses her of killing Marley. Her hidden accounts and the recorded confrontation expose the scheme, and she is arrested as the inmates watch. Ava has been keeping her promise to Marley rather than simply refusing to help Torres. Gillian arranges a boarding-school place, and the sisters say goodbye with a new chance to rebuild their relationship. Cal also watches Emily pass her driving test.
