A missing poker finalist brings Lightman, Gillian and Reynolds to Las Vegas. Amateur Jake Hartman has vanished shortly before a championship that could transform his life. The casino wants him back at the table, while his wife fears something worse has happened. Lightman questions the other players, including Poppy Wells, and discovers that coach Abe Tostevin has been killed. Jake's disappearance is connected to what he saw and the danger he believes now surrounds his family.
Poppy concealed Jake's call because his absence would improve her position in the tournament. Under pressure, she admits arranging a message to his wife, allowing the team to trace him. Jake says he wants his old life back but also conceals Abe's role coaching him. Lightman feeds Poppy information that sends her to confront fellow player Vas Belanov about the death. Their conversation reveals that one of Vas's investors killed Abe to protect their expected winnings.
Reynolds intervenes when Poppy's confrontation becomes dangerous, and the murder scheme is exposed. Lightman also challenges casino owner Hugh Ellis, whose promotion of Jake was less innocent than he claimed. Jake returns for the championship. Away from Las Vegas, Torres teases Loker about his new relationship and eventually admits inventing a supposed rule of attraction to puncture his smugness. Their argument becomes a more direct conversation about whether his girlfriend actually likes him.
