Darkness and Light

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Emily shadows her father during a search for Molly, an eighteen-year-old who has vanished into the pornography business. Her father and younger sister Amy want her home, but finding her does not end the dispute. Molly refuses to return because she believes her father killed her mother years earlier. Gillian gives her somewhere to stay while Cal questions the family and tries to understand the memory that drove Molly away.

Molly also reveals that she is HIV-positive. The investigation identifies other performers with positive tests and reaches Lee Fentris, who presents a recent certificate claiming he is clear. His doctor admits falsifying the testing, and Reynolds arrests Fentris. Gillian stays with Molly as she worries about whether anyone will accept her after the diagnosis. Emily watches the inquiry expose exploitation and sees Molly's father barely restrained when he confronts the man connected to her infection.

Cal learns that Molly's childhood prank caused the fall that killed her mother, and her father concealed it to spare her guilt. Amy offers another account, claiming responsibility herself so the family can reunite. Molly agrees to speak with them, and the three embrace. At home, Emily questions the lie rather than accepting the reunion as a simple solution. Cal admits he would lie to protect her, and she deletes the school story she was writing about the case.
