Season synopsis

In New York, Jack Bauer is preparing to leave government work when an attempt on Kamistan President Omar Hassan pulls him into CTU’s protection detail. Hassan is there to sign a peace treaty with President Allison Taylor and Russia, but his brother Farhad is linked to the plot. Jack and Renee Walker go undercover with Russian arms dealer Sergei Bazhaev to trace nuclear rods intended for Samir Mehran, who plans a dirty bomb. Bazhaev’s son Josef turns against him, while CTU analyst Dana Walsh struggles to hide her criminal past.
Hassan’s security chief Tarin Faroush joins Mehran’s group, which demands that Taylor surrender Hassan or face a nuclear attack. Taylor refuses, and Jack’s detail defeats a U.S. black-ops team sent to seize the president. Hassan gives himself up to protect others. CTU stops the bomb but arrives too late: Hassan has been executed. Taylor persuades his wife Dalia to become interim president and sign the treaty. After Jack and Renee return to his apartment, a Russian gunman shoots her. Renee dies in hospital, and Jack begins hunting those behind the killing and its cover-up.
Jack traces the conspiracy to Russian officials determined to derail the treaty. Taylor orders him detained, while former President Charles Logan offers help and manoeuvres to control CTU. Chloe O’Brian, leading the unit, tries to contain Jack’s pursuit. He kills Dana, Foreign Minister Mikhail Novakovich and Renee’s assassin Pavel Tokarev, then learns Russian President Yuri Suvarov is the mastermind. Jack aims at Suvarov through Logan’s office, but Chloe talks him down. Taylor abandons the cover-up and turns herself in. Jack says goodbye to Chloe and disappears as Russian and American forces search for him.
