After the helicopter attack, Jack Bauer returns to CTU for debriefing while Brian Hastings investigates a breach of the United Nations database. Dana Walsh and Chloe O'Brian trace the stolen security information to journalist Meredith Reed. Agents arrest her just as she approaches President Hassan. Files on her laptop appear to confirm her involvement, but Chloe suspects that someone has arranged an unusually convenient trail for CTU to follow.
Chloe asks Jack to pursue a man seen leaving Reed's apartment building. Jack initially refuses because Kim and his granddaughter are waiting to leave for Los Angeles. Kim tells him that he would struggle to live with himself if Hassan died after he walked away. Jack stays, and Chloe traces the suspect's taxi. When Hastings catches Jack taking weapons, Jack uses Hastings's handling of the helicopter operation to secure permission to leave.
Farhad calls Davros and discusses keeping the suspicion on Reed until his brother can be killed. Dana receives calls from Kevin Wade, who knows her as Jenny Scott and threatens the life she has built at CTU. Meanwhile, Davros visits police officer Jim Koernig under a false identity and demands his shift on the summit security detail. When Jim refuses, Davros holds the couple at gunpoint and shoots Maggie in the leg, forcing Jim to cooperate.
