Jack Bauer heads out to rescue Farhad after learning that Samir's group intends to attack New York with the nuclear material. Farhad breaks cover before the team can reach him and is fatally shot. Jack turns the loss into a trap, arranging for the terrorists to believe Farhad survived and was taken to hospital. The aim is to draw someone close enough for CTU to capture and question about the missing rods.
Samir sends Marcos Al-Zacar to finish the job with an explosive vest. Marcos first warns his mother to leave Manhattan, then enters the hospital. Chloe interferes with the vest's wireless detonator, preventing him from using it when the trap closes. Marcos discovers that Farhad is already dead and retreats into a hyperbaric chamber. He seals himself inside, leaving Jack outside with a live suspect whom he cannot safely reach.
President Taylor demands Kamistani intelligence files that could identify the men around Farhad. Hassan resists sharing them until Taylor threatens retaliation against his country if the attack succeeds. Hastings also refuses Weiss's order to continue pursuing Renee, and she and Jack speak about being together. Away from the operation, Cole insists on covering up the deaths of Kevin and Nick despite Dana's offer to take responsibility. Tarin arranges an escape from custody with help from men loyal to him.
