Choose a moveset, then build around it
There are eight main weapons. They can be paired with any Shell, so a weapon is a moveset choice rather than a class lock. Keep a quick option for tight rooms, a reach option for safer pokes, or a heavy option for the moments when you expect to break posture.
| Weapon | Style | Pickup area |
|---|---|---|
| The Iconoclast | starting melee weapon | Prologue |
| Axe & Dagger | fast dual weapons | Shrine of Trials |
| Veteran’s Battle Axe | battle axe | King’s Crypt |
| Great Martyr’s Blade | two-handed greatsword | Martyr’s Prison |
| Obsidian Hammer | heavy hammer | Obsidianite Mines |
| Black Needle | thrusting spear | Sester’s Bastion |
| Axatana | twin blades for light attacks, axe for heavy attacks | Forgotten Tower |
| Clockwork Scythe | mechanical scythe | Chamber of Becoming |
Match the weapon to the route
The Axe & Dagger is a natural test for players who like quick light strings. Black Needle gives a thrusting option when you want reach. Great Martyr’s Blade, Obsidian Hammer and Veteran’s Battle Axe suit a more deliberate punish, while Axatana changes shape between light and heavy attacks. Those are playstyle differences, not a universal ranking.
Several routes need more than a simple pickup. Axe & Dagger is behind the Chapel Key and the Shrine of Trials. Black Needle requires cleansing Sester’s Gate Beacon, solving its five-bell Sidearm puzzle and finishing the Sesters encounter. Obsidian Hammer comes from defeating Prophet of Profane Infinities at the bottom of Obsidianite Mines. Leave a new weapon equipped for a few normal encounters before paying for upgrades; a moveset you can land safely is worth more than a theoretical damage lead.
Pick the weapon that fixes the current fight
Take a new weapon to a familiar Beacon route and test four things: whether its first light attack reaches safely, whether its heavy attack lands during a real recovery, how much room its follow-up needs, and whether its special behaviour helps against groups or a single target. A thrusting weapon can make a narrow path feel calmer; a fast weapon can fit a short opening; a heavy weapon can reward a clear posture window. None of those jobs makes a weapon universally stronger.
Do not chase a late pickup solely because a list calls it powerful. If the route to it interrupts a working campaign run, mark it and return when its Beacon is convenient. The weapon choice becomes more useful when paired with a Shell and Sidearm that solve the same problem; Builds has the planning method, while the individual weapon pages keep the pickup routes specific.
