Pick the Shell for the fight in front of you
The Harbinger can possess eight permanent Shells. Each one brings its own combat identity and upgrade tree, while your melee weapon and Sidearm remain separate choices. That matters: you do not have to keep a fast weapon on a mobile Shell or a heavy weapon on a tank. Swap when a route or boss asks for something different.
| Shell | Strong point | Useful starting landmark |
|---|---|---|
| Tiel the Acolyte | mobility and shadow play | Widow’s Overlook |
| Proxima the Broodseeker | grapple, Lightning and crowd control | Blackridge Pass |
| Eredrim the Venerable | Break pressure and ripostes | Citadel of Penance |
| Smert the Apostate | risky Resolve play and Chaos | Outskirts of Nochte |
| Gragu the Insatiable | stagger pressure and kill sustain | One-Legged Wolf |
| Genessa the Wayward | summons and ranged control | Outskirts of Mammon |
| Lazlo the Justiciar | durability, Heat and area damage | High Lord’s Courtyard |
| Sariel the Endless | recoverable health and Curse | The Silent Steps |
A practical first choice
Tiel is a good fit if you want a clean escape after a well-timed dodge. Eredrim rewards players who can create openings and commit to a riposte. Proxima is useful when a pull or Lightning effect can stop a crowd from spreading out. Gragu asks you to keep attacking because his healing resource is tied to kills, while Lazlo favours holding ground through busy encounters.
There is no permanent “best” Shell. Start with the moveset that helps you solve the next area, then use a beacon landmark to begin the route for the one you want. See the all Shell locations guide for the full pickup index.
Test a Shell with the weapon you already trust
When you find a new Shell, keep the rest of the loadout familiar for its first few encounters. That makes the difference easy to feel: does the Shell’s defensive answer buy time, does its ability help against the room you are in, and does its Resolve rhythm fit the weapon you can already land? Change the weapon afterward only if the Shell exposes a specific gap.
| Route problem | Shell choice to test |
|---|---|
| You need a clean way through a busy route | Tiel’s mobility and shadow play. |
| A group needs to be held in place | Proxima’s pull and Lightning control. |
| One hard target gives a real riposte opening | Eredrim’s Break and riposte focus. |
| You want to keep pressure after a kill | Gragu’s kill-linked sustain. |
The remaining Shells open later routes and support different effect or survival plans. Find them when their Beacon is convenient rather than interrupting a working first-gate route solely to complete the roster.
