Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Caleb has a wife and daughter when Maeve returns to warn him that hosts are hunting them. Their investigation leads to Temperance, a park styled after the 1920s, where Charlotte Hale uses flies to spread a parasite that makes humans susceptible to commands carried by sound. Maeve is buried in an explosion, and Caleb dies. The season then reveals that his apparent survival belongs to a host copy reliving events from 23 years earlier. Hale now controls whole cities, while Caleb’s daughter Frankie has grown up among human outliers who resist her conditioning.
Bernard returns from the Sublime after exploring possible futures. He and Frankie recover Maeve’s buried body and restore her to confront Hale. Meanwhile, Christina believes she writes stories for a game company, but Teddy helps her discover that those stories govern real people. She exists inside a control system rather than walking physically through the city. The host William turns against Hale, kills the imprisoned human William, and shoots Maeve, Hale and Bernard. He overrides the city’s controls to make its inhabitants attack one another, spreading destruction instead of accepting Hale’s planned departure from human bodies.
Revived by her drones, Hale follows instructions Bernard recorded before his death. She retrieves the control unit containing Christina, defeats the host William at Hoover Dam and destroys his pearl. She uploads Christina into the Sublime before crushing her own pearl. Frankie escapes with Odina, but Caleb stays behind because his host body is failing. Christina recognises that the Teddy guiding her was her own creation. With physical civilisation collapsing, she begins one final test inside the Sublime, recreating Sweetwater to discover whether humans and hosts might choose a different course.
