Season 1

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Westworld begins with Dolores Abernathy, a rancher’s daughter, and the other android hosts repeating scripted lives for guests who can indulge themselves without consequence. When a software update lets hosts retain fragments of earlier loops, Dolores starts recalling violence and a buried town, while Maeve Millay wakes from memories of a different life as a mother. Their growing awareness unsettles the park’s staff: programmer Bernard Lowe investigates the malfunctions, and co-founder Robert Ford pushes ahead with a new narrative despite pressure from Delos executives.

The season’s intercut timelines gradually reveal that William, the gentle guest who once travelled with Dolores, is the Man in Black decades later. His search for the maze is really a search for a challenge in the park; Dolores’s search leads inward, through memories of Arnold, Ford’s deceased partner. Bernard is himself a host modeled on Arnold, and Ford has used him to conceal Theresa Cullen’s murder and to advance his plans. Maeve manipulates technicians into increasing her cognitive abilities and plans an escape, but changes course when memories of her daughter return.

Dolores discovers that the voice guiding her is her own and that Arnold had tried to awaken the hosts before the park opened. Ford’s final story brings the hosts to a gala for Delos leaders. Dolores recognizes her identity as Wyatt, shoots Ford in the head, and the hosts begin their revolt against the guests. Maeve reaches the train platform and has Felix’s directions to her daughter’s location within the park; she leaves the train to find her. Bernard has warned that her escape was programmed; she nevertheless turns back towards the child, while the Man in Black survives the first shots of the uprising.
