Season 4

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Tony Soprano worries that earnings are shrinking and tells his captains to bring in more money, while Carmela presses him to secure her future. Christopher is using heroin, Paulie resents Tony after landing in prison, and the FBI forces Adriana to become an informant. Tony sees Christopher as a possible successor, but addiction and impulsive violence make that prospect uncertain. Meanwhile, Ralph leaves Rosalie for Janice, and his joke about Johnny Sack’s wife starts a dispute that threatens to draw New Jersey into conflict with New York.

Tony’s refusal to share profits from a housing and construction scheme pushes the crews toward war. His bond with Ralph collapses after the racehorse Pie-O-My dies in a stable fire; suspecting Ralph arranged it for insurance money, Tony kills him and gets Christopher to hide the body. Christopher’s drug use worsens until an intervention ends with the crew beating him before rehab. Carmela distrusts Tony’s secret money and affairs, while her attraction to Furio grows dangerous enough that he returns to Italy.

Junior’s RICO trial ends in a mistrial, leaving his legal trouble unresolved. Tony and Johnny consider having Carmine Lupertazzi killed to settle their business fight, but Carmine backs down before the plot proceeds. At home, Carmela learns Tony slept with Svetlana, while Tony discovers Carmela’s feelings for Furio. She calls the marriage over and orders him out. Tony tries to recover a deposit on the shore house he bought for the family, as their marriage separates and the criminal alliances remain unsettled.
