Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Elliot tries to control Mr. Robot through a tightly ordered routine that appears to take place at his mother's house. The setting is eventually revealed as a way of hiding his imprisonment from himself and the viewer. He has been jailed for hacking his therapist's boyfriend and stealing his dog. Inside, Elliot is forced to work on Ray's illegal online marketplace, then alerts the authorities. Leon protects him from an attack by other prisoners and reveals a connection to Whiterose. Elliot's eventual early release returns him to a campaign he no longer fully understands.
Outside prison, the consequences of the Five/Nine hack spread through the investigation and Elliot's friends. Angela uses her position at E Corp to pursue information about Washington Township, attracting FBI investigator Dominique DiPierro's attention. A disturbing meeting with Whiterose changes her course, and she withdraws from pursuing the case through her lawyer. Darlene and Cisco try to discover the Dark Army's next move. An ambush kills Cisco, but Darlene survives. Dom confronts her with the FBI's detailed map of fsociety, showing that the investigators already know far more about its members than she expected.
Tyrell returns alive, contradicting Mr. Robot's earlier account that he had killed him. He brings Elliot to the operation behind Stage Two: destroying a building containing E Corp's paper records. Elliot refuses to accept the risk to human lives and starts disabling the plan. Believing Tyrell might be another imagined figure, he ignores the gun pointed at him; Tyrell shoots him, proving painfully real. Tyrell then calls Angela, who was expecting his contact and approves what he has done. Elsewhere, Trenton believes there may be a way to undo the original hack. Leon approaches her and Mobley, leaving their future unresolved.
