Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Elliot Alderson works at cybersecurity firm Allsafe, protecting the same corporate systems he distrusts. Outside work, he hacks people around him and struggles with isolation and morphine use. A stranger calling himself Mr. Robot recruits him into fsociety, a group planning to erase debts held by the conglomerate E Corp. Elliot helps implicate executive Terry Colby in an attack, but refuses a scheme that could kill people. He instead devises a way to destroy backup tapes by altering the temperature controls at the Steel Mountain storage facility.
The campaign overlaps with Elliot's relationships and vulnerabilities. His friend Angela pursues evidence that E Corp concealed the toxic leak linked to their parents' deaths, eventually bargaining for Colby's testimony. Drug dealer Fernando Vera forces Elliot to hack him out of jail by holding Shayla hostage. Elliot succeeds, only to discover Shayla was already murdered. Meanwhile, ambitious E Corp executive Tyrell Wellick kills Sharon Knowles and loses his job. The Dark Army's cooperation is needed for the larger attack, drawing Elliot into a meeting with its leader, Whiterose.
Elliot's understanding of his allies then collapses. He has forgotten that Darlene is his sister, and discovers that Mr. Robot resembles his dead father because he is another identity within Elliot himself. After meeting Tyrell, Elliot loses three days and wakes in Tyrell's car. The hack has succeeded, destabilising the financial system, but Tyrell is missing and Elliot cannot remember the crucial events. Angela takes a job at E Corp and witnesses an executive's televised suicide. While fsociety's supporters celebrate, Elliot struggles to regain control. A final meeting between Whiterose and E Corp chief Phillip Price reveals connections beyond the revolutionaries' apparent victory.
