Mr. Robot

Season 4

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Elliot and Darlene turn their attention to the Deus Group, the wealthy network behind Whiterose's power. Phillip Price, grieving Angela's death, helps them target its members' bank accounts. Darlene revives fsociety's public voice by exposing the group and directing protesters toward its meeting. The siblings adapt their hack as the gathering changes location, eventually draining the accounts. Whiterose shoots Price after he confronts her. Later, Darlene distributes the stolen fortune, giving ordinary people a share of the money rather than repeating Five/Nine's destructive attack on their financial records.

The campaign also forces Elliot to confront a history he has misunderstood. Fernando Vera takes him and Krista hostage, intending to use the therapist to uncover the source of Elliot's power and make him a partner. Under pressure, Elliot remembers his father's sexual abuse, which Mr. Robot has shielded him from. Krista stabs Vera, ending his attempt to control them. Whiterose offers a different escape from pain, claiming her project can bring Angela back, but Elliot refuses to trust the promise that persuaded his friend.

At the Washington Township power plant, Elliot stops Whiterose's machine; she dies, and a nuclear meltdown is averted. He then seems to enter a happier world where his parents and Angela are alive, he is about to marry, and Darlene does not exist. This is a mental refuge, not proof that Whiterose changed reality. The hacker followed throughout the series is revealed as the Mastermind, another identity who has kept the original Elliot inside that constructed life. In hospital, Darlene confirms their struggles really happened. The Mastermind finally relinquishes control, allowing the brother she remembers to return.
