The war continues after Renly Baratheon’s death, with Robb Stark still fighting for northern independence and Joffrey’s court trying to secure its alliances. Joffrey and Margaery are engaged, while Tywin arranges for Tyrion to marry Sansa Stark. After Rickard Karstark murders two Lannister boys held as prisoners, Robb executes him; Karstark’s men then leave Robb’s army, weakening his campaign. Robb tries to repair his broken agreement with House Frey by arranging a marriage between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. North of the Wall, Jon Snow is accepted by Mance Rayder and grows close to Ygritte. Jaime loses his sword hand while Brienne escorts him. She helps him endure the journey, and they continue south after their release. Bran meets Jojen and Meera Reed as he journeys north, while Arya is captured by Sandor Clegane.
In Essos, Daenerys buys the Unsullied at Astapor, then reveals she can command her dragons and frees the soldiers, who choose to follow her. She marches on Yunkai and sends an assault into the city. At the Twins, Edmure and Roslin’s wedding becomes a massacre: the Freys and Roose Bolton betray their guests, killing Robb, his pregnant wife Talisa, Catelyn and many northern bannermen. Arya and the Hound arrive too late to intervene. Jaime and Brienne reach King’s Landing together. Jon escapes the wildlings and chooses the Night’s Watch over Ygritte; she later wounds him with arrows, but he reaches Castle Black alive. Sam and Gilly also reach the Wall with her newborn son. At the season’s end, Daenerys waits outside Yunkai as the city’s freed people gather around her and call her ‘Mhysa.’
