King Joffrey dies at his wedding feast, and his uncle Tyrion is arrested for the murder. Sansa escapes King's Landing with Littlefinger, while Tyrion's trial turns against him after Shae testifies. He demands trial by combat, but Oberyn Martell's bid to avenge his sister ends when Gregor Clegane kills him. Tyrion is sentenced to death; Jaime frees him, and Tyrion finds Shae in Tywin's bed before killing her and then shooting Tywin with a crossbow. Varys helps him flee across the Narrow Sea. Sansa reaches the Vale, where she claims to be Littlefinger's niece and watches him kill her aunt Lysa.
In the North, Jon warns the Night's Watch that Mance Rayder's wildling army is coming, with Ygritte among its fighters. Sam hides Gilly and her baby nearby. During the attack, Olly kills Jon's former lover Ygritte, and many Watchmen die; Stannis arrives and captures Mance. Wights attack Bran's party near the Three-Eyed Raven's cave, killing Jojen; a Child of the Forest leads the survivors inside. Arya leaves the wounded Hound behind after Brienne's fight with him and sails for Braavos. Daenerys takes Meereen, then learns that her dragons have become dangerous: she chains two in the city's catacombs, while Drogon remains missing.
