Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Emmit Stussy, Minnesota’s self-styled Parking Lot King, runs a successful parking-lot business and owns the stamp collection he inherited from his father. His younger brother Ray, a parole officer, believes Emmit cheated him out of the valuable stamps and asks for money to buy an engagement ring for parolee Nikki Swango. Ray sends another parolee, Maurice, to steal a stamp, but Maurice goes to the wrong Stussy home and kills Gloria Burgle’s stepfather, Ennis. Ray and Nikki’s schemes soon leave Ray dead, while Gloria and police officer Winnie Lopez trace the connected crimes.
Emmit and his partner Sy try to repay the million-dollar loan that helped save their business, but V.M. Varga arrives with a crew and reclassifies it as an investment, making himself a partner. He uses debt, fraud and intimidation to take control of the parking-lot business. Sy is poisoned and left in a coma; Varga keeps Emmit compliant while isolating him from help. Nikki pursues revenge for Ray and joins forces with Mr. Wrench, a deaf criminal from the first season. Gloria’s investigation repeatedly runs into officials who prefer easy answers, even as Emmit’s guilt about Ray’s death begins to overwhelm him.
Emmit confesses to Gloria, but he is released when the case is undermined. Nikki steals Varga’s financial records, and Wrench helps attack his crew at a warehouse; Varga escapes. Nikki finds Emmit stranded on the road and tries to kill him for Ray’s sake. A trooper arrives. Nikki and the trooper shoot each other dead; Emmit drives away unharmed. Five years after the main events, Wrench kills Emmit, who has rebuilt a quiet family life. Gloria, now with Homeland Security, confronts Varga in custody. She expects Rikers; he expects release. The scene ends before we learn who is right.
