Ray Stussy asks his wealthy older brother Emmit for money to buy Nikki Swango an engagement ring. Emmit refuses, and their argument returns to their father's inheritance: Ray took the Corvette while Emmit kept the valuable stamps. Ray now wants the remaining stamp back. A parole officer himself, he pressures Maurice LeFay into stealing it by offering to overlook Maurice's failed drug test.
Maurice loses the address and confuses Eden Prairie with Eden Valley. He breaks into the home of an unrelated Ennis Stussy, kills him and takes ordinary postage stamps. When Maurice demands $5,000 from Ray and Nikki at gunpoint, Nikki calculates his walk downstairs and loosens her window air conditioner. Ray kicks it onto Maurice below, killing him, and Nikki calls emergency services to report an apparent accident.
Gloria Burgle returns to Ennis's house with her son Nathan to collect his forgotten birthday present. She finds her stepfather dead and discovers science-fiction books hidden under the floor. Elsewhere, Emmit and his business partner Sy Feltz try to repay a loan. V.M. Varga informs them that the money was an investment and that his organization has other intentions for their business. An opening scene in East Berlin shows an interrogator refusing to accept a prisoner's claim of mistaken identity.
