About the series

Created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows a specialist team inside the Marvel universe's international security organisation. Phil Coulson returns to field work after the events of The Avengers and recruits agents Melinda May, Grant Ward, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons. The first case brings hacker Skye into their orbit: she has ties to the Rising Tide, a group that wants the hidden world of powered people exposed. The team travels to investigate extraordinary incidents, but the show gradually makes its own agency the central mystery. Its changing missions let the science-fiction threats expand while keeping the relationships among the agents in view.
An early mission takes the team to Peru to recover an 0-8-4, an object of unknown origin. The discovery draws Coulson into a reunion with Camilla Reyes, who brings soldiers aboard the team’s aircraft after an attack at the site. Reyes wants the weapon for her government and takes control of the plane. Coulson’s recruits have been arguing among themselves, but escaping now requires their different skills to work together. They activate the recovered device to blast a hole in the aircraft, breaking the captors’ control. Skye releases an emergency raft to seal the opening. The rescue earns her a place in the team’s practical life even while her continuing contact with the Rising Tide leaves her loyalties unresolved.
The team's trust is tested again when Fitz and Ward are sent to disable a weapon in South Ossetia under a classified assignment. Skye and Simmons learn that the mission has no extraction team and alert Coulson, who brings the rest of the group to retrieve them. The rescue succeeds, but the episode's final conversation turns back toward Coulson himself: even with high clearance, he cannot access the classified file about his recovery after death. What first looks like a team assembled for unusual field cases is therefore also a group investigating what S.H.I.E.L.D. has hidden from one of its own senior agents. Coulson's survival is not treated as a simple explanation; the withheld information becomes an ongoing source of tension.
“Turn, Turn, Turn” destroys the assumption that an agency badge identifies an ally. Skye deciphers a coded message calling HYDRA sleeper agents into action. The team suspects Victoria Hand, but Coulson recognizes the real Clairvoyant when John Garrett mentions information Coulson never shared with him. Garrett’s knowledge exposes his connection to the operation they have been pursuing. A fight at the Hub ends with Garrett captured and Hand confirmed as an ally. That apparent resolution conceals the deeper betrayal: Ward accompanies Hand as she transports Garrett, then kills her and frees the prisoner. Coulson’s own recruit has been working for HYDRA. The revelation turns a distant conspiracy into a wound inside the team, making earlier confidences and relationships newly dangerous.
Skye’s search for her origins brings another revelation in “What They Become.” Her father Cal tells her that her mother came from a gifted people and was taken by HYDRA agents posing as S.H.I.E.L.D. Whitehall stole her mother’s gift of longevity, giving Cal a personal reason to seek revenge. Coulson kills Whitehall before Cal can, provoking a confrontation that Skye interrupts. Cal leaves after telling her that her real name is Daisy Johnson. Beneath the city, Raina brings the Obelisk into a temple, where it opens and releases mist. Skye and Raina become encased in stone, while Triplett’s effort to destroy the device leaves him fatally petrified. Daisy emerges with earthquake powers and sees his body crumble: discovering her identity has also brought a devastating loss.
The fourth season threatens identity through imitation. In “Self Control,” Simmons discovers that the Fitz beside her is a Life Model Decoy, while Daisy finds mechanical copies prepared to replace her. The two women initially suspect each other, then verify their humanity and organize an escape. The May decoy chooses to let them pass rather than follow orders to kill them, destroying the base and the remaining androids behind them. Their missing friends’ minds are held in the Framework, a simulation constructed by Holden Radcliffe around altered regrets. Daisy and Simmons enter it to find a world where HYDRA holds power: Coulson teaches anti-Inhuman ideas, May works for the enemy and Mack’s lost daughter is alive. Rescue now means confronting lives that their friends may not want to surrender.
The fifth-season opening “Orientation” changes the scale again. A monolith transports the agents to an outpost that initially appears to be somewhere in distant space. Scavenger Virgil recognizes them from history, but dies before he can explain everything. Deke helps them evade Kree authorities using implanted identification devices, and their attempt to contact Fitz uncovers the truth: they have also travelled into a future where Earth has been shattered. The Lighthouse preserves humanity under Kree control, with work, payment and survival tied together. Simmons tries to treat a wounded servant rather than watch him die, attracting the attention of overseer Kasius. He takes her into his household and uses a device to restrict her senses. The team must understand this society while divided and dependent on strangers.
The closing chapters bring the time-travel mission back to the people who have carried the series. Simmons has forced herself to forget important information, and Fitz reappears to help her recover it as they work to return the team to its original timeline. The finale reveals that FitzSimmons have a daughter, Alya, and resolves their long separation with the decision to raise her together. Mack continues as director of S.H.I.E.L.D.; May teaches at the Coulson Academy; Daisy and Kora travel in space as representatives of Earth; and Yo-Yo remains active in the field. Coulson, now an LMD, sets out alone in a restored vintage car. The team completes its last operation, then disperses into chosen lives rather than returning to the same unit.
