Buy the map, then make it useful
Shakra sells most early area maps, but a map alone does not draw every passage you have explored. The Quill costs 50 Rosaries and updates owned maps when you rest at a bench. That makes the first useful mapping rhythm simple: buy the area map, buy the Quill when you can, explore a section, then sit down before deciding where to go next.
The Compass costs 70 Rosaries and marks Hornet’s location on the map while equipped. It is a worthwhile early purchase if you are often opening the map and still cannot tell which side of an area you are on. Bench Pins cost 60 and mark discovered benches; Bellway Pins cost 60 and become available after the Bell Beast is defeated. Neither pin finds places you have never reached, but both make an explored area much easier to route.
If you miss Shakra in an area, do not write that map off. After an area boss, she can be found at Bone Bottom and later Bellhart, where you can buy the missed map. Citadel maps are the exception: those come from local machines rather than Shakra.
A bench is more than a save point
Resting saves the game, restores health, makes that bench your death and quit respawn point, updates your map if you own the Quill, and lets you change Crests or Tools. It also refills equipped Red Tools by using Shell Shards. Hit a newly found bench before gambling on a route that could become a long walk back.
Some benches charge a one-time Rosary toll. Check the amount at the bench instead of assuming every bench in an area charges the same price. Judge the purchase by the runback it removes: a nearby checkpoint can be better value than a Tool if it makes repeated boss practice safer.
Bellways begin at The Marrow
The Bell Beast is trapped at The Marrow Bellway Station. Free her with Silkspear, defeat her, and Bellways become the fast-travel network between stations you have unlocked. The victory also gives a Silk Heart, so this is a major route milestone rather than a side distraction. Use Bell Beast before you enter the station if the fight is the hold-up.
When you arrive in a new region, find Shakra or the map source, note the nearest bench, and look for a Bellway only after you know it is on your intended route. That routine keeps your Rosaries pointed at progress. Rosaries, Shell Shards and Tools helps you choose what can wait.
For every currently documented Bellway, its activation cost, area map, and arrival view are collected in the Bellway locations guide. Use that page when you need to identify a station after reaching a new area.
