How to Beat Moss Mother in Hollow Knight: Silksong

On this page

Start from the Ruined Chapel bench

Moss Mother is the first boss in the Ruined Chapel. Rest at the nearby chapel bench before you wake her, then use the first attempt to see both of her basic moves. The reward is access to Bone Bottom, so there is no need to hunt for an item drop after the win.

The arena is small, which makes the fight less about raw damage and more about staying out of the wrong lane. Keep Hornet near the middle when you can. That gives you a direction to jump or retreat when Moss Mother begins moving, instead of trapping you against a wall.

Jump the swoop, then take your hit

Moss Mother’s Swoop starts with a short flight down toward Hornet, then a horizontal skid that covers about half the room. Jump over the dive or use a well-aimed downward Needle strike if you already trust the angle. Let her finish sliding before you turn back for a punish. One or two normal hits are enough; chasing her to the wall is how this early fight turns into a trade.

After the Swoop, reset to a clear patch of floor. If you took damage, the far side of the arena after she passes is your best chance to Bind. Do not begin healing while she is still crossing the room.

Read the ceiling attack

At first, the Headbutt sends her into the ceiling and drops three stalactites. Small dust puffs show where each will land, and they do not always fall at the same moment. Watch the floor, step into a clear lane, and wait for the last rock before attacking again.

As her health falls, the same move can produce Mossgrubs. Clear them quickly if they are blocking your route or making the ceiling harder to read. They also give you Silk, so a controlled cleanup can create the Bind you need. Do not stand under a dust marker to farm them; survival still comes first.

Keep the plan short

Moss Mother only asks you to repeat two answers: jump the Swoop, then move out of the falling markers. If you can do that without rushing, the fight ends. Use a Silk Skill only after you have a healthy buffer or a real finishing chance. Otherwise, hold the meter for Bind.

Once she falls, go to Bone Bottom, rest, and pick up your map plan. Getting Started covers the next priorities, while Silk, Bind and Combat gives the wider rhythm you will use on later bosses.
