Approach and preparation
Crystal Sage is the left branch from Crucifixion Woods. Rest at the Crucifixion Woods bonfire, take the path through the ruined building to the long corridor, and use that corridor as the fixed landmark for the fog approach. Clear the Sage’s Devouts before you use an Ember or a summon if you want the first attempt to begin cleanly, but do not call a cleared enemy route a shortcut: those enemies return. Eygon of Carim can be summoned from the left side of the corridor when his condition is met. Bring a weapon that can hit quickly after a teleport and enough focus or stamina to move before the next cast.
Chase casts, then read the clones
In the first half, stay near cover without hiding from the Sage. It uses a slow Crystal Orb, a raining Crystal Hail, Homing Crystal Soulmass, a ground-tracing White Dragon Breath, and a short rapier sequence if you crowd it. A pillar is useful against the projectiles, but the moment after a cast is your chance to cross the arena. Reach the Sage, land a compact attack string, and expect a teleport. Do not commit to a slow charged attack while the Homing Soulmass is already floating above it; those crystals delay their shots and punish a player who assumes the first spell was the whole turn.
At roughly the lower half of the health bar, the Sage teleports and creates three clones. The phase becomes clear once you identify the colour: the real Sage casts purple crystal magic; the clones cast blue. Use the pillars to make the blue volleys hit stone, then run to the purple caster. A clone can be removed with a quick hit if it blocks your route, but clearing all three is usually slower than interrupting the real Sage and forcing another teleport.
The dangerous pattern is a clone volley arriving while the real Sage uses Crystal Hail or Soulmass. Do not sprint in a straight line between casters. Go from one piece of cover to the next, wait for the purple cast that gives you a gap, then attack the real target. The Sage cannot teleport while its Homing Crystal Soulmass remains active, so a confident player can use that window to close in; a cautious player can instead let the projectiles fire harmlessly into a pillar. Both plans are better than chasing every blue image across open ground.
Reward and next step
The fight yields the Soul of a Crystal Sage and opens the road to the Cathedral of the Deep. Keep the soul if you want Ludleth at Firelink Shrine to transpose it into Crystal Sage’s Rapier or Crystal Hail. The boss is optional for the direct Farron route, but the Cathedral branch it opens contains the Deacons and a required later key item. Continue to Deacons of the Deep before the Irithyll gate becomes your next hard stop.
