Approach and preparation
The Abyss Watchers wait after Farron Keep’s three extinguished fires open the great doors. Use the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire as your boss checkpoint, then open the gate at the other end of its hall back to the Road of Sacrifices. That gate is the major shortcut: it joins the perimeter to the earlier route and keeps the run to the fog short after a death. Spend your souls and reinforce the weapon you plan to use before the fight. The Watchers are fast enough that changing equipment because of a bad first attempt usually creates a worse second attempt.
Use the first-phase infighting
The first health bar begins as a duel with the lead Watcher. Its long lunging slash, spinning sequence, and diving leap are the moves to wait for. Stay just outside the end of the sequence, then hit once or twice from the side. A second Watcher joins later, followed by one with red eyes. The red-eyed Watcher attacks the others as well as you. Do not rush into the middle to make use of it. Keep the lead Watcher in view, let the hostile pair draw its attention, and use the moment after a leap or a clash to damage the leader.
If the lead Watcher turns toward you while the red-eyed one is active, move away and let them finish the exchange. This phase is not about eliminating every body on screen. The extra Watchers are temporary pressure and temporary cover. A wide panic roll can put you into the path of all three blades, so choose a direction with open floor, wait for a committed attack, and move past it. Heal only when the leader is tied up with the red-eyed Watcher or has completed a long sequence at the other end of the arena.
When the first bar reaches zero, the lead Watcher rises alone with fire on its sword. This is a real second phase: slashes gain flame trails and some recoveries produce an explosion. The old opening after a leap can still work, but wait for the flame follow-through to finish before you answer. The ground-tracking fire and delayed end of the combo punish a player who rolls once and assumes the attack is over. Stay near the side, move through the final swing, and keep each punish short enough to leave before the next fire line.
Reward and next step
Victory gives Cinders of a Lord and the Soul of the Blood of the Wolf. Return the Cinders to Firelink Shrine when the game asks for the Lords, and keep the soul if Ludleth’s transposition options interest you: it can become the Farron Greatsword or Wolf Knight’s Greatsword. The door beyond the arena opens the Catacombs of Carthus. Check Boss Progression first, because the Cathedral and its Deacons still supply the item that makes the later Irithyll barrier passable.
