Find the altar before you decide to summon

The Elder is the Black Forest boss and the next progression gate after Eikthyr. First make the Antler Pickaxe, establish a copper-and-tin route, clear Burial Chambers for Surtling Cores, and give yourself a functioning forge loop. You do not need to exhaust every copper boulder, but you should be able to replace food, repair the main kit, and recover a grave without leaving the original starting stones naked.

Look for The Elder’s Vegvísir in Burial Chambers or around ruined Black Forest structures. Interact with it to mark the Ancient Bowl on your map. The altar may be on another island. Mark a shoreline, portal landing, and safe Meadows edge on the approach instead of sailing in with the three offering items and hoping the route works out.

You need three Ancient Seeds to summon The Elder. Greydwarf Brutes, Greydwarf Shamans, and Greydwarf nests are the usual early sources. Keep the seeds in a home chest until the boss route is ready. They are not ordinary crafting trash, and the nest will continue to generate pressure while you stand in one place, so destroy it only when you have stamina and a clear retreat.

Set the arena up for a return, not a speed kill

Before the boss day, place a protected portal or bed at a safe distance from the altar. Keep its tag written exactly at home. Build a roofed workbench and chest nearby if the route is long, then leave the field portal outside the arena where enemy attacks are less likely to reach it. Carry a repaired bow, a large arrow stack, a melee option, a shield if it fits your style, food, and enough supplies to rebuild the field portal if necessary.

Eat three foods, get Rested, and fight in daylight. Clear loose Greydwarves and small trees from the immediate path so the Elder’s attacks and roots do not hide behind clutter. The altar’s large stone pillars are useful cover. When the Elder uses a ranged vine attack, move behind a pillar; when roots appear, leave the ground they occupy instead of trying to out-damage them. Take bow shots when the boss is exposed, then reset behind cover. Keep stamina in reserve for moving between pillars.

Do not put a flimsy wooden box around the arena or summon while your food is fading. If you die, take the recovery route seriously: eat, rest, use the spare kit, pull the boss away, retrieve the tombstone, and leave with the Corpse Run window. Death and Corpse Recovery has the exact reset pattern.

Use the reward to open the Swamp phase

Loot The Elder Trophy and the Swamp Key. Take the trophy to the starting stones to select the Elder power, which improves chopping and pickaxe work and boosts health regeneration. Keep the Swamp Key in a marked chest when not travelling; it opens the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, where Scrap Iron and Withered Bones begin the next progression stage.

The key is not a command to rush into the first swamp at night. Make poison-resistance preparation, refresh food, and build a portal route first. The Elder win means your Black Forest basics are working; use that base to make the Swamp trip a planned expedition.
