Valheim Workbench and Repairs Guide: Shelter, Upgrades, and Free Fixes

Build the bench under cover
Make a Hammer with 3 Wood and 2 Stone, then equip it and open the build menu. A Workbench costs 10 Wood. Place it on level ground, but do not expect it to work in the rain. Put walls and a roof around it until the interaction prompt no longer says it is exposed. A small workroom beside your bed and fire is enough.
The bench is your early crafting menu, your building radius, and your repair station. Keep a chest within a few steps for Wood, Flint, Leather Scraps, Deer Hide, and stone. That turns a return home into one short loop: unload resources, repair, craft, eat, take Rested, and leave again.
If a build piece is red, step closer to the bench or move the bench so its circular build range reaches the job. If the workbench itself says it needs a roof, fix the roof rather than placing a second exposed bench. Open sides can work when the overhead cover is complete, but a proper little shed also keeps your fire and bed close by.
Add upgrades when your gear needs them
Workbench level rises when you place each support piece within two metres of the bench and connect it individually. The first two are worth making before Eikthyr:
| Upgrade | Recipe | What it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Chopping Block | 10 Wood, 10 Flint | Adds one Workbench level; it makes a basic bench level 2. |
| Tanning Rack | 10 Wood, 15 Flint, 20 Leather Scraps, 5 Deer Hide | Adds one distinct Workbench level; with the Chopping Block, it makes the bench level 3. |
Find Flint along Meadows shorelines. Hunt boar for Leather Scraps and deer for Deer Hide. The extensions can sit outside the workroom, but each must be within two metres of the bench and show its own dotted connection. Do not overlap those connection paths. Workbench levels unlock or improve different gear; the Antler Pickaxe itself needs a covered Workbench, 10 Wood, and a Hard Antler after Eikthyr.
Later upgrades need materials from later stages, so do not strip your first bronze reserve just to chase a bench number. The early goal is a repairable bow, armour, axe, and pickaxe supported by food and Rested.
Repair before every trip
Use the workbench and look for the small hammer icon on the right of the crafting menu. Click it once to repair one damaged carried item. Click it again until the icon is greyed out. Repairs at a workbench cost no resources. The item must be in your inventory, so unequipping is unnecessary, but a broken tool left in a chest will not be fixed until you carry it to the bench.
A metal item may need the appropriate later crafting station rather than the wooden workbench. Do not throw away a nearly broken Antler Pickaxe or make another one before checking the repair icon and station requirement. Put the right station at the base or at a temporary metal camp, then repair before another ore run.
The usual mistake is leaving with a red durability bar because you are saving Wood or leather for crafting. There is nothing to save on ordinary repairs. Repair first, then use Food and Rested to leave with enough stamina for the return. Once Eikthyr is down, a covered Workbench makes the first mining tool part of the same home loop.
