Valheim Death and Corpse Recovery Guide: Recover a Grave Without Feeding the Loop

Stop after the first death and prepare at home
On normal death settings, your inventory becomes a tombstone at the death site and the map marks it. You also lose skill progress on the first death, then gain No Skill Drain for a short period so immediate follow-up deaths do not keep taking skills. That protection does not make naked repeat runs a good plan. The fast way to lose the expedition is to sprint back hungry, die in the same group of enemies, then repeat without changing anything.
At the bed, eat three foods and wait for Rested. Open a chest that you prepared before leaving: cheap food, a basic weapon, a shield or bow, a little wood, and simple clothing. Do not take your only replacement gear into a reckless recovery unless the grave is already safe. The aim is to reach the marker alive and create one advantage, not to win every fight on the way.
If the grave is in the Black Forest, travel in daylight, mark the boundary route, and avoid adding a fresh dungeon or copper job to the run. If it is near Eikthyr or The Elder, pull the boss away from the marker before opening the tombstone. A few seconds of safe interaction matters more than a heroic damage attempt.
Reach the stone, loot, then leave
Use trees, rocks, terrain dips, and distance to split enemies. Run only when it gets you to cover; preserve stamina for one dodge, a block, or a turn around a tree. If you built a field portal earlier, use it for the approach. If you have not, make a temporary safe point only when you can place and protect it without standing in the threat that killed you.
Interact with the tombstone when you reach it. Recovering it gives the Corpse Run effect for 50 seconds, improving your ability to survive and run away from enemies still nearby. Treat those seconds as an exit window. Pick up the grave, equip enough armour or weapon to survive, and leave for the portal, boat, or known Meadows route. Do not stop to mine the copper deposit that originally killed you.
Inventory space can be the real problem. If the grave contains ore, do not arrive carrying a full bag of replacement items. Put unneeded recovery supplies in a chest outside the danger area before the final approach. If you cannot carry everything, take food, armour, weapon, and portal materials first, retreat, then make a controlled second trip.
Make the next recovery easier now
After the return, repair your gear for free, restock food, and put the recovery kit back. Place a named portal at a protected Black Forest edge and leave an untagged home portal for emergencies; Portals and Metal explains the pairing pattern. Mark copper, shoreline tin, Burial Chambers, and dangerous routes on the map while you still remember the terrain.
The common mistake is treating a grave as proof that the area must be conquered immediately. Sometimes the correct next move is to eat, rest, repair, return in daylight, collect only the equipment, and go home. That turns one death into information instead of a chain of deaths.
