Wednesday and Hester investigate the graves of former Willow Hill patients and discover that the official deaths conceal missing outcasts. Wednesday sends Uncle Fester into the hospital to find the person she thinks is called Lois. His search, helped by Thing, leads toward Augustus Stonehurst and his daughter Judi. Wednesday eventually uses a musical visit to enter Willow Hill herself, with Agnes helping and Enid insisting on joining them. Below the hospital, Wednesday and Fester discover that LOIS is a secret programme rather than a person. Captive outcasts have been used in experiments intended to transfer their abilities, and Judi has continued her father's work after his collapse.
Releasing the prisoners turns the hospital into a struggle Wednesday cannot control. Slurp escapes, and Laurel frees Tyler in the hope of recovering her hold over him. Instead, Tyler kills the woman who awakened and directed his Hyde. His attack on Wednesday follows as she remains inside the hospital to help another captive. He throws her through an upper window, leaving her badly injured on the concrete below before escaping into the night. The programme has been exposed to Wednesday, but its surviving secrets and escaped patients leave her with more danger than she anticipated. Her final thoughts return to Morticia's warning that intervening could make the situation worse.
