An intimate photograph circulates at Moordale, and the sender threatens to reveal whose body it shows. Ruby turns to Maeve for help despite her usual contempt for her, and Maeve brings Otis into the search. He is supposed to be celebrating Eric's birthday with their annual trip to see a film in costume. Instead, he follows Maeve to investigate the threat and leaves Eric waiting alone. Their search leads to Olivia, who wants Ruby to understand how constant criticism feels. Otis challenges the blackmail while also pointing out the cruelty in the girls' friendship.
Eric's birthday becomes frightening when his belongings are stolen and a stranger assaults him. Jean collects him, but Otis initially arrives home absorbed in his own evening with Maeve and fails to understand what Eric has endured. Their argument breaks the trust between them. Maeve also struggles after meeting Jackson's mothers, feeling out of place and inventing details about her family. Jackson later visits her caravan and shares his own anxiety, allowing them to speak more honestly. At school, Maeve stands up during an assembly and claims the photograph is hers. Other students join her, making it harder to isolate Ruby through public shame. Otis's success in helping with the photograph cannot repair the damage he has done to Eric.
