Steven recognises the hippopotamus-headed figure as Taweret. She explains that he and Marc are dead, and that the hospital lies within a boat travelling through the Duat. Their hearts must balance on the Scales of Justice before they can enter the Field of Reeds. Since the scales keep moving, Taweret tells them to uncover what they have hidden from each other. Doors in the hospital corridors lead into memories that Marc has resisted sharing.
Steven sees Marc's younger brother Randall drown after the boys enter a cave. Their mother blames Marc and later abuses him. Marc explains that Steven emerged during that childhood suffering, with a happier understanding of their home. Steven also learns their mother is dead and sees Marc unable to enter her funeral. Elsewhere in their memories, Marc recalls the mercenary operation in which his partner killed Layla's father. Wounded and facing death himself, Marc accepted Khonshu's offer to become his avatar.
As souls fall into the underworld before their time, Marc and Steven ask Taweret to help them return and stop Harrow. She turns towards the Gates of Osiris, but their hearts still do not balance. Steven tells Marc that Randall's death was not his fault, and they begin to understand the life they share. Hostile spirits attack the boat before they can escape. Steven fights to protect Marc, falls overboard and becomes trapped in the sand. The scales finally settle, leaving Marc alone in the Field of Reeds.
