FBI investigator Ben Reynolds brings the Lightman Group into the hunt for a rapist copying imprisoned Andrew Jenkins. Lightman poses as an inmate, hoping to establish a connection, but Jenkins spots the disguise. Another woman, Camille, has been abducted, creating a short window to find her before the attacker follows Jenkins's pattern. Letters from admirers and a frightened prison guard suggest that Jenkins can still send instructions outside.
The guard admits carrying messages because Jenkins threatened his daughters. Meanwhile, Gillian brings survivors together to recover details of the copycat's captivity. The inquiry reaches Paul Russell, husband of one of Jenkins's original victims. He is secretly an admirer who married her to get closer to the crimes. Lightman uses Jenkins's jealousy, including a fabricated photograph suggesting that Camille is dead and his follower has surpassed him, to expose the connection.
Reynolds narrows the search through Paul's vacant property listings, looking for a house that matches the circumstances of the abduction. Agents find Camille alive and capture Paul. Torres then learns that Lightman's apparent loss of control during the interviews was part of a longer deception that used her reactions too. She confronts him about withholding the plan. Afterwards, Lightman accepts an FBI retainer that brings Reynolds and federal resources into the consultancy, despite the investigator's resistance to working for him.
