The Irish gang's losses bring Finn Cooley to New York, determined to capture the Punisher and recover stolen money. His men search the city and identify Frank Castle through the apartment Matt already found. Matt, Karen and Foggy attend Grotto's funeral, where the small gathering gives Matt time to confront his failure to save their client. Karen keeps investigating Castle's medical records and begins to suspect that Reyes has hidden important details about his past.
Frank visits the carousel connected to his family's deaths, where Cooley's men capture him. They torture him for the money, but he refuses to cooperate until Cooley threatens the dog he rescued. Frank supplies a location that draws men into an explosive trap and breaks free. Matt reaches the hideout in time to help him fight his way out, though Frank has already killed Cooley after demanding answers about the massacre that took his family.
In a cemetery, Frank tells Matt about returning from military service and promising his daughter another bedtime story. Her death left that ordinary promise unfulfilled. Matt persuades Brett Mahoney to take credit for the arrest so the neighbourhood can see the law succeeding. Karen has found photographs in Frank's abandoned family home that support his account. Afterwards, she and Matt share a kiss in the rain. Matt returns home to find Elektra waiting inside.
