About the series

Daredevil brings its superhero story down to a law office, a neighbourhood and the people being pushed out of both. Blind lawyer Matt Murdock and his friend Foggy Nelson establish their practice in Hell’s Kitchen, where rebuilding after New York’s destruction has become an opportunity for criminal interests. Their first client, Karen Page, has discovered financial wrongdoing at her construction-company employer and is framed for murder. Getting her released does not end the threat: somebody wants her dead because of what she knows. Matt is already operating as a masked vigilante, pursuing the same corruption through methods he cannot admit to his partner. Karen joins their small firm, but the people behind the scheme erase evidence and remove witnesses before the lawyers can follow it to its source.

Matt’s heightened senses do not spare him pain or make every rescue clean. After a Russian gang abducts a boy to lure him into a trap, he is found badly injured in a dumpster. Nurse Claire Temple takes him in and treats him without knowing his name. The gang’s search reaches her building, forcing her into the danger she was trying to help him survive. Matt extracts information from a captured gangster and returns for the child despite his injuries, fighting through a hallway to reach him. Flashbacks show his father Jack, a boxer ordered to lose a bout, choosing to win and leaving his winnings to Matt before being killed. That childhood loss gives the present-day rescue a personal weight: violence can destroy a family long before a crime becomes a case file.

Wilson Fisk wants the neighbourhood remade on his terms and keeps his identity hidden behind business partners and intermediaries. His controlled daily routine conceals memories of an abusive father and a terrified mother. Wesley handles much of the contact with others, but Madame Gao makes clear that Fisk cannot disguise failures by relying on his assistant to translate for him. The lawyers and journalist Ben Urich plan to expose Fisk publicly, only for Fisk to announce himself first as a benefactor dedicated to rebuilding Hell’s Kitchen. Vanessa, the woman he has begun to love, knows his past and accepts him. Her support helps him turn a threatened secret identity into a respectable public one. Matt’s search for an enemy now faces a man the city is being invited to admire.

The damage to Matt’s friendship with Foggy becomes as serious as his physical wounds. Finding out about the mask means Foggy has to reconsider years of apparent honesty, including Matt’s abilities and the risks he has taken without telling him. Matt tries to justify the double life while recovering from injuries, but his intentions cannot erase the deception. Karen is pursuing Fisk through a different route. She brings Ben to a nursing home without fully explaining the visit, where Fisk’s mother reveals that he killed his father as a child. The information is deeply personal but does not establish the present criminal organisation they need to prove. Meanwhile, guests at Fisk’s fundraising event collapse after drinking poisoned champagne, including Vanessa. The public success he has staged turns into a crisis inside his own circle.

With Vanessa in hospital, Wesley tries to deal with the threat created by Karen and Ben’s visit to Fisk’s mother. He acts without telling Fisk, kidnaps Karen and attempts to frighten her into abandoning the investigation. Karen takes the gun he has brought and shoots him, escaping with a secret of her own. Her willingness to kill contrasts with Matt’s struggle over the limits of his violence, while also showing how little protection the legal investigation has offered her. Matt follows the trail of Fisk’s unusually protective clothing to Melvin Potter, a craftsman working under pressure from the criminal organisation. Their encounter begins with a fight but ends in an agreement: Potter will make Matt a suit that can withstand more punishment. Resistance now depends on people previously forced to serve Fisk.

Karen discards Wesley’s gun and tries to continue working while Fisk learns that his closest aide is dead. Matt pursues the money trail into Gao’s heroin operation, where a fight starts a fire and leaves him rescuing the blind workers as Gao escapes. Foggy persuades Marci to provide information from the files available to her, giving the investigation another route into Fisk’s business. Ben’s editor refuses to publish his story, and the argument ends with Ben losing his job. Encouraged by his wife, he decides to publish independently instead. Fisk reaches his apartment before he can do it and strangles him. The cost is no longer a threat in a corridor or an intimidating message: the person trying to put the truth before the public has been killed at home.

Fisk’s organisation finally breaks from within. Owlsley reveals that he and Gao arranged the poisoning of Vanessa and announces that he intends to take money and leave. His insurance is the corrupt detective Hoffman, who can expose Fisk if Owlsley fails to check in. Fisk kills him anyway and orders a search for Hoffman. Reconciled, Matt and Foggy find the detective first, and his evidence brings arrests across the network. Fisk still escapes custody through officials he controls, forcing Matt to confront him in Potter’s new armoured suit. Matt defeats him and hands him to an honest police officer; Vanessa leaves without Fisk, and the newspapers identify the masked man as Daredevil. The firm can celebrate, but its survival has required witness testimony, stolen information, personal reconciliation and a final street fight, with Ben’s death still part of the victory.
