Matt speaks with Father Lantom about evil and whether killing Fisk could ever be justified. The investigation has stalled since Fisk presented himself as a public benefactor, and Matt visits Vanessa's gallery to understand the man through someone who loves him. Fisk arrives while he is there, allowing the two opponents to meet without the mask between them. Lantom later asks Matt to consider whether he was seeking a reason to kill Fisk or a reason to stop himself.
Elena refuses to abandon the fight for her apartment, but news of her murder reaches the law office. Matt identifies the killing as a deliberate attack on someone they tried to protect. Angered by Fisk's public sympathy for her, he hunts the man responsible and learns that someone arranged the murder. The trail takes him to a waterfront building, where redevelopment plans and a waiting Nobu reveal that Elena's death has drawn him into an ambush.
Nobu's blade and chain leave Matt severely wounded before their struggle ignites spilled fuel and sets Nobu on fire. Fisk then emerges, acknowledging that he used Elena to lure Matt there and hoped his enemies would destroy each other. Matt cannot overcome Fisk in his injured state and escapes through a window. He reaches home and collapses, where Foggy discovers the masked man and removes the hood to find his best friend underneath.
