Choose Kuro’s route, then return to the rooftop
Obtain all three incense-route items before returning to Ashina Castle: the Mortal Blade from the Divine Child after Folding Screen Monkeys, the Lotus of the Palace from Guardian Ape, and the Shelter Stone from Corrupted Monk. That full set triggers the castle invasion and opens the rooftop choice. Choosing Break the Iron Code, stay loyal to Kuro starts Great Shinobi Owl. Obeying Owl instead begins the Shura branch and removes the Fountainhead Palace route, so make the story choice deliberately before treating this as an ordinary optional boss. The arena is the same roof where Genichiro stood, but Owl’s traps make careless healing much more expensive.
This page is for Great Shinobi Owl on the castle roof. Owl Father is a later, optional Purification-route duel in a changed Hirata Estate and has different attacks, including spectral owl pressure. Do not take a strategy for Owl Father into this encounter and expect the same phase plan.
Stay in sword range and use the normal Sekiro exchange: attack until Owl deflects, then answer his counter. His heavy overhead strike and certain long finishing swings are the moments to step aside and punish. If you retreat too far, he can throw shuriken, chase, or recover posture. Pressure matters, but it has to leave you ready to respond to a tool.
Treat tools as hazards before opportunities
Owl throws a healing-blocking bomb. If it lands near you, move out rather than trying to use a gourd inside the cloud; the seal prevents the heal and can waste the only safe opening. He also uses firecrackers and smoke to break your view. When the screen is disrupted, defend or create distance until you can see his next movement again. Guessing a counter through smoke is how a manageable phase becomes a resurrection loss.
In the later portion, poison creates an additional patch-control problem. Do not chase him through it just to keep Posture pressure. Reposition to clean ground, let the poison stop controlling the exchange, and resume the same close-range rhythm. Healing windows are earned after a long finisher, a missed heavy strike, or a reset where Owl is genuinely outside of immediate reach.
| Owl action | Response |
|---|---|
| Anti-heal bomb lands | Leave the cloud before using the Gourd. |
| Heavy overhead finish | Sidestep late, then take a short punish. |
| Firecracker or smoke sequence | Stop attacking, regain sight, and defend the follow-up. |
| Poison controls the floor | Move to clean ground; do not chase through the cloud. |
Victory grants the Memory of Great Shinobi Owl and the Aromatic Branch, allowing Kuro’s main ritual route to continue. Spend any complete Prayer Bead set and Gourd Seed before the next region. Progression and Endings explains the ending-sensitive steps that must be handled before later story locks, especially if you intend to pursue Purification or Return rather than simply following the Severance route.
